After telling me her story, Saraswati left. I did not charge her, but I knew that this would not solve her problem. I thought about Saraswati all night and wondered what could be done to help these illiterate, cheated and downtrodden women.
Then the next day I received a call from my aunty who needed a housemaid for her daugher-in-law who had just had twins. I felt as if God had showed me a way to help Saraswati.
I recommended her to my aunty. My aunty gave Saraswati a good income and a good home to live in.
After a few days she came with her sister who was educated and was looking to become independent like her sister. I recommended her to one of my friends for a receptionist’s position. From this came the idea of NAARI, an organization for making women self-dependant.
Setting up NAARI was not an easy task, since there are so many legal formalities for female organizations. I was very young and all alone, so I dropped the idea. And then one sunny morning when I was having coffee a group of women came to my house (guided by the ever so dear Saraswati of course).
Everybody had a common story, cheated, exploited and dowry victims.
I recommended nine of these women to domestic maid jobs.
Now these ladies are independent and all eleven of them are working hard to live a respectable life. I may have not been successful in giving them an organization but when one day Saraswati came to my home with a box of sweets because she had got admission for her daughter at a nearby school, she fell to my feet and said : you have given my daughter and I a respectable living, may God give you much success.
I realized I had done nothing I just showed them a way – a way to self-respect and thereafter, all eleven of them continued this tough journey themselves.

So here’s my dilemma- I’m the father of two children under the age of four, and I’m a bazillion years old and a crippled up mess. I know that the only chance I have to be a functional dad is to start a new life plan. Now. Immediately. I do all of the cooking in our house, so I decided to cut pork and beef out of our diet. Not in a fanatic way. If some bacon finds its way home occasionally, I’m not going to lose my mind, but as a general rule I’m going to try to stick to things with fins or feathers as our meat sources, and increase our veggie intake. My family just plops down and eats whatever I put in front of them, so resistance is futile. I’ve started slipping some spinach into the morning fruit/protein shake I make for my lovely wife every day. I even bought a raw foods diet book. Not to follow completely, but just for some healthier alternates to compliment the turkey breast I cooked for 10 hours in Sweet Baby Ray’s award winning bbq sauce in the crock pot. I’m happy with the start, but I know that I need to do more. I can’t get up every morning and spend the first 2 hours of the day huddled in my recliner with my big headed dog sprawled across my lap, slurping down half a pot of coffee, and expect to hop up when the rest of the house wakes up and be all perky and cheery. I need to deal with this old creaky body too. I used to go to the gym in the morning, but that’s out till the chillin’s get a bit older and are able to fend for themselves, so I need an at-home option. I decided to try some yoga. Maybe if I spend an hour each morning trying to learn how to put my feet behind my head while chanting “OH WA TA FOO LIAM” I won’t be so cranky and sore all the time. So I bought a couple of beginner yoga dvds from Amazon. They came yesterday. I went to bed early last night intending make today my new beginning. Friday Feb. 11, 2011. Mark it down on the calendar. That is day 1 of the new and improved Jeff 2.0. I will no longer be a helpless victim to my broken down arthritic body. I’m taking this ship back. I went to sleep with a plan. A new direction.
Then I woke up. I’m pretty sure some vicious little midget biker gang snuck in last night, slipped me a roofie, and then beat me with their tiny little mini tire irons. My back hurt. My hips hurt. I think one of my shoulders broke and then healed overnight. There was a new mystery pain in my ankle. Even my eyeballs were sore.

I will continue through into this second base phase

I’m back at it this week. I finished up my recovery week and now I’m diving into base 2! I’m excited for this, it means I’m a block of training fitter, I’m getting into bigger workouts, and I’m closer to race season!!
Part of recovery week was some testing, as I’ve talked a little about. My recovery week worked, almost, like a mini-taper for some short training races. The first half of the week I had short low intensity workouts and at the end of the week I had some short high intensity workouts to gauge the fitness I gained. Not to brag or anything (Haha) but I gained some solid fitness! Go figure, my first structured block of training for tris and I drop my swimming pace and I raised my functional threshold on the bike! That is so exciting.
I’m excited to finally lower my t-pace for swimming but I new that would happen and will continue to happen. Swimming was always in my wheel-house so I know I can keep bringing that down. I wasn’t so sure about the bike. It’s not like I didn’t think I was getting faster, I just don’t know how fast I can be, or how long it will take me to get there. I’ve never done this before.
Well, my FTP or functional threshold pace, went up substantially from my testing at the end of December. I really improved over the past month and a half and I’m really pumped to see what more I can do. I mean, you do make the biggest gains when you first start something but with what I just did I really think I can raise my FTP a bit more during my second and third base phases. I really think I’m a much better cyclist than I originally thought!
This is a very good thing because the races I’m most interested in racing right now take some serious legs on the bike portions. I’ll need that power to hold back a good deal of those naturally gifted runners! Speaking of my running, my test for that was sub-optimal but I couldn’t do much about that. Nasty weather and crazy wind reeked havoc on my HR and pace. I know my running is in a good enough place right now though. I can absolutely use improvement but I would rather focus those gains on my cycling right now.
Which is where I will continue through into this second base phase. I’ll be hitting some of my highest numbers yet in training, like 20+ hour week! That will most certainly be tough but I’m looking forward to the challenge. I start this week with almost 16 hours of training, many of which I’m starting to see with hills. This base phase will really start to emphasize my strength and endurance, beyond the basic endurance foundation I build in my first base phase. I like to think of this this second base phase as a second layer of spackle on some new drywall. I’ll have one more layer then I can sand, put a first coat on, a second coat on, and that finishing coat… Ironman lake placid!

I really wish I could go to triathlon training camp

I really wish I could go to triathlon training camp.  I keep reading all these tweets and facebook posts about pro tri teams starting team training in all these warm, exotic locations.  Even most of the guys and gals I’ll be riding with this summer will be heading off to Nevada for tri camp at the end of next month.  I, on the other hand, am broke and can not travel anywhere to train this spring.  So I will make lemonade from my frosty lemons and I’m changing up my routes and routines around WNY this spring.
I started today.  I am a creature of habit, as you may well know, so I tried breaking out of that today.  I like to run many of the same routes around my neighborhood and particularly use a street just next to my house for my stride workouts.  I decided to venture out today and run strides on someone else’s street.  I need to find a street with a slight uphill, as that’s what the training called for today.  There aren’t so many streets with any uphill in my neighborhood so I was a bit limited in my selection unless I wanted to drive somewhere but driving to run always seems so counter productive to me unless it’s with a group or for a long workout somewhere.  So I found a street about a mile away from my house and headed out.
I took a route to get there I have never run before.  Then I proceeded to run strides in front of these people’s houses that were probably a bit perplexed and possibly a little unnerved that someone was essentially pacing back and forth in front of their home.  The folks in my neighborhood are used to me always running by when I have a stride workout… yeah not the folks in this new neighborhood, some seemed a little creeped out!  Oh well, I got my workout in so I could care less.
When I finished my strides I started my cool down heading back home by choosing streets at random to turn down.  I’m not super comfortable not knowing where I’m going but because I know the area around my house pretty well it makes it a ton easier to get home by choosing streets at random.  I wouldn’t be doing this somewhere away from my local area.
It was nice to see different houses and run a different route.  I want to keep doing this through the spring so I can have my own version of spring training in a new location.  I may not get the warm temps or super sunny days but the change of scenery will do me good and I can live with that.  I can’t do much about my swim surroundings unless I put a blow up palm tree on deck but I’m not sure my gym would appreciate that.  As for the bike… I’m going to start putting up some visual imagery around me.  I have some things up now like numbers and all my power zone and HR info but I’m thinking some shots from Placid and Kona.
These changes will be my own spring training camp. I don’t need a trip to Hawaii to get my body primed and my competitive juices flowing.  I just need to re-explore my own terrain and utilize it in a whole new way… and stay positive!

In a released today by McKinsey Global Institute (MGI), McKinsey & Company's business and economics research arm, we find real, tangible ways that the United States can retool its economy for the coming age of global growth -- and productivity is at the heart of this endeavor. In fact, the United States must increase its productivity growth rate by 30 percent or more to sustain historical economic growth rates in coming years. As the labor force ages and economic rivals crop up the world over, boosting the efficiency of every American worker will be vital to staying ahead in the global economic race.

Why is productivity key now? In short, because two other factors are working against the weak economy: Government and individuals are cutting back on spending in order to pay off debts, even as an aging population no longer gives the economy the natural demographic lift it once did. MGI finds that the United States needs to accelerate productivity growth to an average rate not seen since the 1960s if the economy is to return to the rates of GDP growth witnessed over the past 20 years and sustain the gains in living standards to which Americans have become accustomed.  
Still skeptics abound on all sides. Some doubt whether productivity can really help return the United States back to economic health. Naysayers argue that the U.S. productivity engine is running out of steam anyway. Others yet worry that productivity is little more than business-speak for job cuts. They point to the period since 2000, during which sectors that saw the largest productivity gains -- computers, electronics, and manufacturing -- also lost jobs. Still others see China's pursuit of higher technology manufacturing as a sign of pending U.S. decline.
The numbers tell a different story, however. Since 1929, the United States has recorded simultaneous increases in both productivity and employment every ten-year rolling period except one, research from the MGI report finds. Even on a rolling annual basis, productivity and jobs have grown in tandem the majority of the time. In anything but the short term, it is a fallacy to suggest that there is a trade-off between productivity and jobs.
One reason is that productivity has two components: efficiency and innovation. Getting new, faster computers or organizing production to minimize waste are examples of the first; building better, higher quality products or creating new services are examples of the second. Both types of productivity gains can lead to higher employment when the savings are put to work elsewhere in the economy. In the 1990s, for example, the United States saw productivity growth from both efficiency and innovation, and unemployment hovered below 6 percent. This is a broad balance to which it now needs to return.
And productivity growth needs to accelerate. For half a century, increases in both labor supply and productivity contributed almost equally to robust GDP growth of 3.3 percent. Baby boomers and women streamed into the workforce. Now however, the boomers are retiring and female participation appears to have plateaued. Already, in the first decade of the 21st century, productivity gains have contributed 80 percent of total GDP growth compared with 35 percent in the 1970s. If the United States is to continue to enjoy the same levels of GDP growth experienced by previous generations, productivity will have to bear even more of the burden going forward. To compensate for the coming demographic changes, productivity growth will need to accelerate by 34 percent -- to a rate not that hasn't been seen since the 1960s.

While the troubles in Egypt and Tunisia are important in Washington's geo-strategic calculations, they don't rank highly in its selfish concern over real estate. All that changes when it comes to the tiny Persian Gulf state of Bahrain, an island tucked between Saudi Arabia and Qatar on the gulf's western shore with fewer than 1 million residents. The home of the U.S. Navy's and a recently-launched $580 million U.S. expansionslated to double the U.S. Navy's acreage there -- could be in jeopardy if Bahrain's monarchy falls.

They were angry over the death of a man, in a clash between police and mourners, at a funeral for a demonstrator shot at an earlier anti-government rally, Reuters. The killing, a day after a "Day of Rage" of protests on Monday, suggested more unrest between Bahrain's majority Shiite Muslims and the Sunni security forces backed by the ruling Sunni Al Khalifa dynasty.
The (Iran-friendly) Shiite majority, which accounts for almost 70% of the population, wants the (Saudi-friendly) king, Sheik Hamid bin Isa al-Khalifa, to rewrite the constitution to give Shiites more power and opportunity, while also seeking investigations into allegations of torture and corruption (sound familiar?).
The downside to all this unpleasantness is that Bahrain is the U.S.'s most important post in the Persian Gulf. It's ground zero when it comes to monitoring the oil flow -- nearly one gallon of every five used worldwide -- down the gulf and through the narrow Strait of Hormuz. It's also a key base from which to eyeball Iran on the other side of the gulf.
The 5th Fleet and a base used by the U.S. Air Force both call Bahrain home. But the U.S. presence there has always been a sensitive topic. Following World War II, the U.S. had a large presence in Bahrain, but that shrunk in 1977 after Shiite efforts to end the monarchy there failed but succeeded in terminating a docking pact for U.S. warships. But the two sides kissed and made up following the 1991 Persian Gulf War, and the U.S. presence once again blossomed. There are up to 30 Navy vessels in the region at any one time, and they often dock in Bahrain for resupply and R&R.
And there's a welcome bonus for sailors in Bahrain. Unlike most other nations in the region, alcohol is available. In fact, it's so popular that the Navy has a "Tipsy Taxi" program so sailors who have had a bit too much to drink while out on the town can flash a special card at taxi drivers and get a free ride back to base

Game-playing motorists were also found to run more red lights, attempt dodgy over-taking moves and suffer from road rage.

The study, which compared the driving skill of2,000 gaming and non-gaming drivers found gamers thought they had superior reaction times and understanding of car dynamics.

A spokesperson for Continental Tyres which carried out the study, said: "It seems that while gamers develop useful skills and are more confident, they need to apply some balance with a sensible assessment of risk.

"The most important issues for driving safely are concentration, an appreciation of road and vehicle conditions and an awareness of potential risks.

However, it looks like the board game bust-ups will continue because 42 percent of folk say they like to play the games to show off how intelligent they are.

A spokesperson for Lego Games, which commissioned the poll, said: "Board games are popular with adults and children alike, but these findings show that many adults take them very seriously indeed.

"Even the simplest of games can bring out a competitive streak in people, but it's never a good idea to take things to the extreme.
